Dear friends,
Today we are with you again and we will tell you about our the exciting fishing weekend in Sirdal.
Sirdal
Sirdal is a municipality located in the northwestern part of Agder, Norway. To the west it borders Lund, Bjerkreim, Gjesdal, Eigersund and Sandnes and Rogaland county. It is bordered on the north by Bykle and on the east Valle, Bygland and Kvinesdal, on the South by Flekkefjord.
Sirdal is a good tourist destination with exceptional nature, beautiful lakes and lots of fish in them. Therefore perfect for a fishing weekend 👌
Fishing weekend day I
A long time ago we had planned a special fishing tour to enjoy our hobby. Еxcited me and two other members of our team, Veselin and Janos, we chose a weekend to spend the night there. For the purpose we rented a cabin in beautiful Sirdal, packed our bags and left. Janos had already visited this place before with his children, and knew the area quite well..
The great lake Sirdalsvatnet welcomed us.
We couldn’t wait to start our fishing weekend and stopped at the first convenient place by a large waterfall. But after several trials we caught just a few small trout. We were not happy about this fact and continued up.
After a few kilometers we reached the small village of Haughom. There a small narrow road led down to the small wooden pier, where a bay formed that looked promising. In addition a small river flowed on the right side, and on the right, about 300 meters away, there was another, larger river.
We cast our sticks in action and soon the tips of the rods began to vibrate. As a result of our effords we caught two or three pretty good fish. But we didn’t want to waste time and decide to ignore the rivers on the right side. So we moved on to our main goal. We drove through two tunnelsand and moved up along the lake on our left. Finally, after 3 hours travel, we reached Tonstad.
Tonstad
Tonsdad is a beautiful, little village where the big lake begins. That’s right here the Sira River flowed. The estuary was not large. But it was enough to create this rapids or the current we needed. The rain had stopped a few hours before we arrived. The weather was quiet and pleasant for fishing. In addition, there was only one fisherman on the other side of the estuary.
Without wasting any time, we started throwing the fishing rods. From the first casts we had a catch, very good mountain trout about 500 to 800 grams each. We caught the three of us constantly, releasing the smaller ones of 500 g. After a while, more fishermen appeared, mostly on the other side. What was more interesting was, that we hook much more often then competitors. They looked at us with a bit of envy, and at one point we had fish on the hook at almost every throw. Indescribable pleasure! The fish kept jumping around us and we didn’t stop. The biggest fish I took out for the day was 1.3 kg.
We caught a lot of fish and tired we went to the cars to continue our way to the cabin. The plan was to sleep over and the next day to climb high in the mountains.
We arrived and checked in. After we cleaned the fish, we put it in the freezer. Then we had a barbecue. It was a really nice end to the evening. Soon we went to bed tired and satisfied with the plenty of fish.
Fishing weekend day II
The next morning, without much delay, we got in the car and drove up. Since it was the end of May, we knew the snow was melting in the mountains and we didn’t think the lakes there were still covered by ice. Therefor we were surprised by the view we met – ice everywhere. However, we found a dam that was not frozen and we started from there. After an hour of persistent throwing, we didn’t catch anything, we didn’t even get a single tug on the hook. So Veselin walked a little further alone to explore the other lakes. It wasn’t long before he came back desperate and told us it was best to go down to Tondstad again. We had to make a change from the our original plan.
Change of the plan
A little disappointed, we got in the car and drove back. On the way we stopped at several places to try our luck, but alas, only small fish. We were so focused on fishing that Veselin had lost his phone at one point. So we had to went back to the place where he had last used it and fortunately we found it. Immediately after that we drove to yesterday’s place and as soon as we arrived we started impatiently throwing fishing rods. But now it was very different. There was wind and about five fishermen on one side and two more on the other.
No one was catching anything, including us … Janos and I decided to keep trying down, but Veselin was tired enough and decided to go back to Kristiansand.
We stopped at the place where we caught the first fish but this time we decided to get closer to the rivers that flowed from the right into the lake.
Fish after fish
It wasn’t long before we started catching fish after fish. We already had enough, but the pleasure was great when I hooked 950 grams of trout. Janos also caught quite large fish from 700 to 800 g.
I felt pain in the body, we caught and released the fish back but did not give up. Since I had no strength, I decided to go back to the car. Janos told me that he was comming in a little while. I was so tired that it was difficult to get to the car. So I sat inside and waited, but he didn’t come.
After an hour of waiting, I went to the pier to see what was happening and where he was. And to my great surprise, I found out that Janos was where I left him. He persisted in fishing. I took out the phone and called him to come back, and he said: I’m coming, I’m coming, but he wasn’t coming. I called again in half an hour and finally managed to pull him away.
Laughing and visibly pleased, Janos began enthusiastically to tell how the fish kept biting whole the time. Very satisfied we headed to Lillesand…
On the way back
But at one point, as we were talking passionately, we realized that we had forgotten some things on the last place. Janos had forgotten his knife, and I had a whole box lures. We came back and luckily we found them. It was late, so we decided to travel back without stopping anywhere. But passing by other lakes and watching the big circles, we stopped again just to try :)) …. At 22:30 local time I was home without any strength!
Thank you for visiting Norway fishing & nature!
We hope to see you again soon!
