There are many species of fish in Norway, but one is a hobby for many fishermen. and this is the sea trout. In fact, the big focus here is on salmon, because sea trout have no commercial interest. But this fish is important to angler. It is a renewable resource and should receive greater protection. Some fisher, for example, are only interested in this fish, and this is normal. It can raise the adrenaline when on the hook and cause incredible emotions. It is also a wonderful food fish.
When I started fishing, I thought that it would be very difficult for me to catch such a fish. However, over time I gained experience and now I often smile. I will introduce you to some subtleties and give you advice.
There are sea trout in the sea all year round. The most exciting seasons for me are spring and fall. Of course I’m not writing off summer.
The minimum size of a trout caught is 35 cm. Anything smaller you must immediately return to the water to continue growing. An important condition is that when you are next to a river, you must be at a distance of at least 100 m from it to be able to fish.
Initially, I started fishing only with a haspel rod and baits from 5 to 27 grams. Here the stick is enough to be 9 feet. However, the success of fly fishing is great. The rod should be grade 6, 7 to 8 max.
Where to find sea trout
It is important to know where this fish stand. Аnd if we think about it, it can be anywhere. But sea trout is constantly moving and is where it has access to food. In the spring, when the water reaches 4 to 6 degrees, I’m already at the sea. We find a southern bay where it is shallow and the water is warmer. If the bottom is leopard and there is an inflowing stream nearby, this is your place. Usually the depth should be no more than 20 to 50 cm and a little further in it gets deeper.
The fish stand and toast in the shallows but the best catch is when you cast a little in and right on the border between shallow and deep it attacks the bait. It should not be more than 5 to 10 g. From flies, it is good to use shrimp imitations. In late spring, as I said, the fish move and look for food in other places. They can be in large gulfs not so deep and especially near the coasts.
You can look for places that are open to the open sea. Between rocky islets, for example, is great in this period. If you hit a high tide, your fishing is guaranteed.
Seasonal behaviour of sea trout
Spring
Even later in May, the fish move along islands, beaches, reefs and capes, it is good to have a little pressure – movement then is wonderful. Remember to always be quiet and cautious when approaching such places so as not to scare her.
Summer
In the summer, when the water is 17, 18 degrees, it is more difficult to catch sea trout, but don’t give up. The best fishing is at night and in the morning. In spring, early in the morning, the sea trout is on the hunt for a sand eel, which comes out from under the sand to feed. In the evening, she chases the herring. It is important to choose the right bait to be successful. Lures in green are good.
Keep in mind that at this time of the year the mackerel are very active. Use lures of 12 to 20 grams maximum. Children who are keen on fishing is the time to learn how and in what way to fish, summer is their wonderful time. Pay more attention and advise them, there is no greater pleasure if a child hooks a sea trout.
Autumn
When autumn comes the trout is well guarded, it is strong and the adventure is magnificent. September and October when the temperature drops below 16 degrees the fish move towards the shore which means you can fish from almost anywhere. They also congregate in pre-spawn shallows or places such as bays with sandy and slightly rocky bottoms near streams. You can use light baits such as wobblers and slowly sinking slugs. Bombarda is also a good solution. Fly fishing is always an asset. Imitators of various insect species are current, dry flies also work well. Cast carefully close to shore and not inland. It is good to fish at high tide early in the morning or in the evening hours before sunset.
Winter
Winter can also be fished, but we personally don’t do it. We prefer the fish to be freed from the salt as well as unharmed. Just to mention the spin technique is to try different speed. Sea trout will bite in many cases when you stop spinning and the lure starts to sink.
