Dear friends,
Today we will introduce you to a really exciting place called Roeros.
The way from Trondheim to Roeros
From Trondheim, we’re heading back to Oslo and from there to Arendal. This time, we decide to choose a different route and pass through the populated place called Roeros.
This is a municipality that has gathered 3 other municipalities, or a total of 4 in 1: Roeros (Røros (bergstaden)), Roeros landsogn, Glaamos, and Brekken. Around 3,840 people live in this town.
We head back on the E6 and at a place called Støren, we turn left off the main road and travel along road Fv30. We pass by the river Gaula, which is very long and has a large salmon fishing zone. As we pass by, we see many fishermen again.
Of course, this is one of the best rivers for salmon. We stopped at a place where we talked to people who were fishing on the river. As we continued upstream, we enjoyed the diverse vegetation and picturesque scenery.
But most of all, we were enchanted by the river itself. We reached the place where the last fishing zone ends. It’s a quite large waterfall where the fish cannot swim further upstream. We stopped at a small roadside parking lot from where we can reach the Eidfossen waterfall (Ålen) itself.
After that we continued our journey, experiencing the indescribable landscapes we passed through. We climbed up and down rivers and lakes, enjoying every picturesque view that unfolded before us. Finally, we reached the town of Røros itself.

The copper mines
Here is one of the most important copper mining fields, which played a significant role for the local population in the past. The first operations in the Gamle Storwartz mine began in 1645. The operations continued with some interruptions until the mine was closed in 1972/73.
Another mining field is Nordgruvefeltet, along with the Arvedals Mine (later known as Kongens Mine), Christianus Sextus Mine, Rødalen Mine, and Mug Mine. The last mine, Lergruvbakken, was in operation until 1977.
Now everything is a tourist attraction that showcases the past of this interesting place. There is also a small museum with photos from the past, and you can even buy small local souvenirs to remind you that you’ve been here.
The town
After a long walk through the mining fields, we also explored the town itself. Many well-preserved houses in an antique style, still well-maintained. A small commercial street with lots of shops, cafes, and bakeries. The church is preserved and well-maintained, standing on a hill behind the mines, preserving the sacred memories of the past. An interesting place where the past still lives and lingers in the air.

Røros is known for its production of cheese and dairy products. At the last World Championship for cheese, Røros won 5 medals.
We highly recommend to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Røros and explore the beautiful areas further down Østerdalen. Here you will find accommodations, places to eat, attractions, and all the information you need for a successful stay. Discover countless opportunities for an unforgettable experience!
The mountain town of Røros is one of the oldest wooden towns in Europe and one of the few mining towns in the world included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. And now we’re heading back to the destination Arendal.
