Dear friends,
Today we have the pleasure of introducing you to an incredibly exciting place called Roeros.
The way from Trondheim to Roeros
From Trondheim, we’re excited to head back to Oslo and then onward to the charming town of Arendal. This time, we opt for a different scenic route that takes us through the picturesque Roeros.
Roeros is a fascinating municipality formed by the amalgamation of four areas: Roeros (Røros (bergstaden)), Roeros landsogn, Glaamos, and Brekken. With a close-knit community of around 3,840 residents, this town exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Our journey continues on the E6 until we reach a quaint spot called Støren. Here, we take a delightful detour, turning left off the main road to follow the scenic road Fv30. We are thrilled to travel alongside the beautiful Gaula River, renowned for its extensive salmon fishing areas. The sight of numerous enthusiastic fishermen adds to the vibrant energy of our adventure.
After that, we joyfully continued our journey, marveling at the breathtaking landscapes we traversed. We eagerly climbed up and down rivers and lakes, cherishing every picturesque view that unfolded before us. Finally, we happily reached the charming town of Røros itself.

The copper mines
Here lies one of the most significant copper mining fields, which greatly benefited the local population in the past. The operations at the Gamle Storwartz mine began as early as 1645. These operations continued, with some pauses, until the mine’s closure in 1972/73.
Additionally, there’s the Nordgruvefeltet mining field along with several other fascinating mines such as the Arvedals Mine (later known as Kongens Mine), Christianus Sextus Mine, Rødalen Mine, and Mug Mine. Impressively, the last mine, Lergruvbakken, remained in operation until 1977.
Today, this area has been transformed into a captivating tourist attraction that celebrates the rich history of this remarkable place. There’s also a charming museum filled with vintage photos, and visitors can purchase delightful local souvenirs to remember their visit.
The town
After a refreshing walk through the mining fields, we also explored the town itself. Many well-preserved houses in an antique style, still beautifully maintained. A charming commercial street with plenty of shops, inviting cafes, and delightful bakeries. The picturesque church is well-preserved and stands proudly on a hill behind the mines, honoring the sacred memories of the past. It’s an enchanting place where the past still vibrant and resonates in the air.
