Dear friends,
In our previous posts we made you familiar with the beautiful nature and fishing opportunities in the vicinity of the town of Mandal. Today we would like to share with you our impressions and exciting experiences from our last trip to southwestern Norway, in a direction a little north of our trips to Srømmen and Tregde. The west coast is charming! Enjoy reading!
The small town Egersund is the southernmost in Rogaland District. In the old days, the city has had a good port life. And now it is major a fishing harbour. Egersund is located right by the sea, so it has always been a central place for shipping and fishing.
The nature around Egersund is genuinely nice. It is hilly with many lakes, rivers, mountains, and remarkably diverse vegetation. Here are many small, beautiful plains and valleys next to the open sea. The highest peaks are Dalane and Store Skykula. The water basins offer wonderful opportunities for swimming, fishing, and hiking around. When you er here, it is good idea to visit the tourist port and the Eigerøy lighthouse. There are many pleasant hikes in the area, as well.
Here you can find roads suitable and convenient both for off-road and cycling. The hilly area contributes to the extreme experience too.
The sea offers for diving lovers’ wonderful activities, as well as nice boat tours.
The climate here is also varied- from nice sunny weather to quite windy.
The town Egersund itself is very cozy. Many of the old architecture is preserved with small wooden houses and pretty courtyards. We can honestly say that this is the city with the most preserved old wooden houses in Norway.
In summer, it is a popular arena for many concerts and lively events. The Dalane Museum offers rather good information about the history of this amazing town. There are many attractive areas around that are worth to visit.
Egersund Church, built in 1623 is another curious place in the city centre.
Outside Egersund there is another atraction situated – The stone circle Stoplesteinan. The monument has a diameter of about 21 meters and consists of 16 raised stones. There are presumptions that they are dating back to the early Iron Age, between 500 BC to 600 AD.
Eigerøy Lighthouse was built in 1854. An amazing hike takes you there. The route is about 4.5 km in both directions. From the centre of the town drive up past the gas station Shell and continue along the road Eigerøyveien 502 over the bridge. At the roundabout, turn right to lighthouse on the road Ytstebrødveien 65. Drive along the sea and follow the signs until you reach the parking lot. After that, the trail goes by foot. There is good marking everywhere.
For camping lovers, we can recommend Steinsnes NAF Camping which is only a 10-minute drive from the centre. There are good places for campers and similar tourism around as well.
In the Egersund area you can find a variety of activities both in summer and in winter and skiing is a quite popular when there is snow here.
Egersund is a type of city where you will never be bored, and something always happens!
We really recommend you visit it!
