In Norway, the pollock is called lyr. I started catching many of them. This is a good sport fish. When it is caught on the hook, it gives a good resistance during the first few minutes and the fight with it is quite exciting. The pollock is remarkably alike another fish, namely sei(coalfish), but we will talk about sei later. Both are fish species in the cod family. They are different in a line on the side of the fish where the lyre (pollock) has a clear curve. The back and sides of the pollock are characterised by a yellowish shade. It reaches a size of 12-13 kg and more, but here there is a limit, you must let it go if its bigger than 8 kilos. The best fish are 3 to 5 kg and they can be caught often.
The fish inhabits waters ranging from 30 to 80 meters deep against rocky and steep walls, rarely approaching and chasing the bait to shore. My experience shows that it can also be caught at a depth of 10 meters. So, I began to understand better where I could catch this sort of fish.
It was one of my next fishing trips. After a lot of trying, I succeeded to catch only one pollock about 1200 g. I soon decided to throw three more times and call it a day. On the second throw I hooked something big. It was hard to wind with the reel. The rod was strong, but it bent like never before. I was fighting whit it for about 10 minutes until I brought the fish almost to the edge of the rock. I saw a huge back, which twisted and splashed in the water. Embarrassed, I pulled the fish with force to climb the rock. It was a huge pollock, weighing at least 4 kg.
I tried to grab it by the gills with one of my hands. The jumped in the air with force one last time. Then unhooked and splashed in the water. I just was looking at the way it slowly disappeared into the depths. It was the biggest fish I had caught in the last two years. And although it managed to break free, I was extremely happy. It was an amazing experience.
Mackerel and pollock are healthy fish. Mackerel contains a lot of omega 3. Lyre (pollok) on the other side has vitamin B 12 and selenium, as well as a good ratio of potassium and sodium as well.
