Today we have brought you another interesting story from the not-too-distant past and many nice photos. Fly fishing rod was alså with us! Enjoy!
It was Saturday again, a nice and slightly chilly February day. We had decided to go fishing, and had previously planned the route and the place where we were going. And necessarily, my new fly fishing rod came with us!
The chosen location was near the town of Risør. It was only 10 km ahead of it. The fjord where we were going to fish is called Sandnesfjorden. On one side of it is a peninsula between the village Laget and inland Åkvåg. And on the other side is the town of Risør.
On the road with my fly fishing rod
We traveled along the E18 in the direction of Arendal. Here we turned onto road number 410 along the sea in the direction of Tvedestrand. Then we turned onto road number 411, winding between small fjords and mountain slopes towards Risør. We chose this road because of the beautiful views and nice fishing spots.
The place
We reached the village of Laget and at the u-junction we we turned right onto the road Åkvågveien. Our place is about 7 km away. Here there is a small parking lot next to the sea. Only 10 m away is a small beach, and on the left there is a rocky shore. We see a leopard seabed and a depth of 1m for 40m. Then it starts getting progressively deeper. We decided to try both fly and reel fishing.
But it was February after all, quite cold, about 3 degrees and a light north-easterly breeze.
We love fishing
We drank a hot coffee enjoying the nature. Then we prepared the fishing rods and started.
Fly fishing rod
I decided to give the fly fishing rod a try. On a 3 – 4 throw hit hard. I pulled the rod up with a taut line and started reeling in slowly. Obviously I had hooked something big. Indeed the surprised me, because it was Ballan wrasse that I managed to catch.
A little to the right after the beach I saw a wooden pier that seemed good to me and I moved there. And Sara remained throwing from the rocks.
Seа trout
With the first fall of the fly it hit hard and lo I saw a fine seа trout leap up. Fortunately, after 5 minutes of struggle I was able to tire it out and bring her to shore. This time the dip nett was next to me and I caught a good fish about 1kg.
I was pleased. From the rocks, I heard Sara muttering contentedly, but I didn’t know what she had caught. I called to ask her and she had caught a Ballan wrasse.
А little more emotion
Further to the right I saw a flat rock and moved again. It was wet and had to be careful. But, ecstatic and motivated, I didn’t pay much attention to it. During one of the casts, I managed to slip and fell into the sea… I got wet but only up to the waist. This time my phone was in the upper pocket of the fishing vest and luckily I didn’t manage to get hurt. I slowly walked over to Sarah who was laughing on the other side. Yes, it must be comical to see someone fall into the sea like that, but I didn’t really find it funny. I was actually quite wet and suffering from cold.
I went back to the car and changed. Referring to experience, we always carried spare clothes with us just for such moments. After thet we ate, drank a coffee each and decided to move about 200m to the left. One hour later , without much fishing success, we got into the car and headed home.
It was an exciting February day, with a lot of emotion. We enjoyed the amazing winter nature of Risør, managed to take pictures and last but not least we caught a delicious fish!
Thank you for visiting Norway fishing & nature!
We hope to see you again soon!
