As a general rule, fishing on the Norwegian coast is free for all. It is crucial that future generations also have this opportunity. That is why everyone here is making efforts to prevent extinction and secure supplies for the future. There are some things and tips that are important to know.
Sea fishing:
– Use only easily portable and not too heavy backpacks/ fishing accessories.
– It is forbidden to use nets and similar to catch fish in large quantities.
– Keep a distance of at least 100 m from a fish farm. Also boats should pass at least 50 m away from such farms.
– Selling the catch is forbidden.
– Do not fish below the minimum size. If a fish below said size is caught, it must be let out again.
Minimal sizes for common fish species:
Cod -40cm, Haddock -40cm, European Hake -30cm, Flounder -29cm, Whiting -32cm, Atlantic Halibut -80cm, Blue flounder -45cm, Sea trout -35cm.
Freshwater fishing:
There are over 60,000 lakes and rivers in Norway where fishing is allowed. The Directorate of Fisheries(Fiskedirektoratet) has the responsibility for all rules in use. It is allowed to fish only with a fishing rod and by hand, and it’s forbidden to use nets.
Fishing is free for children under 18. If there are salmon and sea trout in the rivers and lakes, the children must follow the local rules. Adults have to buy a fishing ticket as in different reservoirs and counties the price per day is different, but never too expensive. Acknowledge the rules set by the district centers, as they can differ from place to place
The rivers inhabited by salmon are strictly regulated and other rules apply to them, which will be introduced in their own post on our page:)
