Dear friends, Today we will tell you about an amazing place for fishing lovers – fisherman’s paradise Tonstad og the mouth of the Sira river.
It was late spring. Perfect fishing weather. We gоt up early and we set off. Our route was northwest from Kristiansand on road number 39 towards Stavanger. We pass several settlements such as Mandal, Lyngdal and Flekkefjord. This is a road with impressive scenery. We admired small fjords, lakes and rivers. Actually, we were headed to a place called Tonstad.
We have already wrote in one of our previous blog posts about the mouth of the Sira River, which flows into the great lake Sirdalsvatnet. Right there we could fish, of course our favorite mountain trout.
We found out that it was a very good place for fishing, a true fisherman’s paradise. Of course our favorite mountain trout. The local people told us about the lake where we could catch some pretty good and big fish there.
Shortly before Flekkefjord, the road turns right through the village of Feda, following road 42. It is easy to find Tonstad on GPS.
The first thing we notice when traveling along the shores of Sirdalsvatnet is that they are quite steep and it is difficult to reach the lake.
But still there are several places where we can reach it.
One of the locations is about 10 km before Tonstad, at a small private harbor Haughom. And we have written to you about this before.
However, we continue along the road to the place where the Sira River flows into Lake Sirdalsvatn. After about two and a half hours we reach the place. It’s different here. The shore is low and there is a parking lot where we can leave the cars literally next to the river and the lake.
To our astonishment we see no fishermen here… We therefore started casting without delay right around the mouth of the river. Even with the first attempts, we were surprised by an aggressive trout that hit powerfully. In half an hour, all three of us had caught 3- 4 fish each, wow amazing.

After a little over an hour, two or three more fishermen came. Some of them caught, some didn’t. But the most interesting thing was that we kept catching fish after fish. It was even more impressive that the fish were from 700g up to 1.6kg. This fisherman’s paradise is really amazing!

And the place itself is extremely beautiful. Quite high mountains surround it, and up the road there are amazing lakes. These are, of course, the lakes of Sirdal region, about which we will tell you additionally more.

In another blog, we will also tell you about the Sira River, which, by the way, continues downstream and after Lake Sirdalsvatnet. Fishing there was even more exciting and so was the scenery.

It is interesting to mention that there is a road on the other side of the lake. The road is carved into the rocks and is very exciting to travel. And it is very difficult to get to the lake because of the steep terrain. However, there are places, as we mentioned, from where you can reach it.
Nonetheless, if we continue along the river up, there are roads that diverge to the left and right and you can reach the cherished high mountain lakes of Sirdal. And there, what nature and what fish are there, oh oh, one can only sigh!! ! A real fisherman’s paradise!
That’s why, dear friends, we highly recommend this great and magical place.
You can rent villas or apartments and also indulge in great walks high up in the mountains. You can sleep in a tent, you can fish and last but not least take amazing photos and videos to remind you of the wonderful experience!!!
Thank you for visiting Norway fishing & nature!
We hope to see you again soon!
