Dear Friends,
Here in this post, we will introduce you to the fish species in the salt water of Norway.
Small spesies
Grey gurnard (Knurr) is a fish that could get hooked very often. This is a bottom fish that reaches 30 cm in length. Sometimes it makes a growling sound. It has many bones and a large hard head.
Greater weever (Fjesing) is a poisonous fish. It has venomous spines on its back and can cause big trouble and even death when pricked. So be careful. This is a demersal fish and reaches 40 cm in length. It has stripes in yellow-brown or blue and green.

Ballan wrasse (Berggylt) is blue-green or yellow-brown in colour, grows up to 50 -60 cm. One could catch it mostly along the south coast all the way to Stavanger.
Medium species
European bass (Havabboren) is a relatively new species of fish on the Norwegian coast. This is a fish that prefers warm waters. Perhaps with the rise in temperature, it has become more common in recent years here. It looks like a perch, but is thinner and larger, silvery with a smaller fin on the back. In our waters it reaches 50 cm in length and rarely up to 4.5 kg. It is caught on the surface but at night it retreats to a depth of 20 meters. Incredibly good fish for us.
Haddock (Hyse) is a fish again from the cod family. Occurs in southeastern Norway. The back is dark and the belly white. There is a large dark spot on both sides of the pectoral fin. Normally the size is about 60 cm, but can reach much more.
Merlangius (Hvitting) occurs in the North Sea. He has a dark green back and a white belly. Can reach up to 75 cm in size and weigh over 3 kg.
The body of Rose fish (Vanlig Uer) is covered with shells. It is red in color and is slightly lighter on the abdomen. Reaches a length of 70 – 80 cm and rarely up to 15 kg. Inhabits the waters of the Skagerrak at a depth of 80 to 130 meters.
Large species
Cod (Torsk) is a very important fish in Norwegian waters. In colour it can be gray, brown or even reddish hue depending on what the food eats. The abdomen is light to white. Reaches dimensions up to 160 cm and weight up to 50 kg. There is a thread on the chin. She wanders around constantly looking for food. The evening is approaching near the shore.
Saithe(Sei) is a fish that is remarkably like the Atlantic pollock (Lyr). Difference is in a straight line and a dark to black back. It reaches a length of 1m and can weigh up to 18 kg. Located mostly in the North Sea and Skagerrak.
Cusk (Bromse) is a fish of the cod family. What is specific about it is that there is only one dorsal fin, surrounded by a white line. The body is quite long with a brown back. It reaches a length of about 1 m and weighs up to 14 kg.
Atlantic halibut (Kveite) is a fish that spawns in deep fjords. It lives long and reaches a length of 2 meters. After 15 years can reach 100 kg in weight and much more. Very good seafood.
Common skate (Storskate) is a good seafood and is found all along the coast. It has a sharp snout and reaches 2-3 meters and about 95 kg. It lives in deep waters from 80 to 130 meters.
Garfish (Horngjel), Common ling (Lange), Capelin (Lodde), Atlantic mackerel (Makrell), Raja (Piggskate), European plaice (Rødspette) are other species living here. We have already talked much about Atlantic pollock (Lyr) . And Salmon (Laks) and Sea trout (Sjøørret) can inhabit both salt and fresh water.
