Dear friends,
It is time for fishing again!
Yesterday, a beautiful October morning, Janos, a friend of mine, and I decided to head to Bykle. We were inspired by the feeling that we would try again our beloved hobby – fishing. One of our favourite fish, the Mountain Trout, was waiting for us high in the mountains.
We travelled north on the E9 road. We left at 6 o’clock in the morning and took the distance to the top for about 3 hours. At this time of year, the weather is quiet, slightly cool, and quite gloomy. When we reached the destination and got out of the car, our smiles disappeared. Up there at the so-called Bykleheiane, on the first and highest lake we met rather cold wind, accompanied by fog.
In search of the right place
The desire to go fishing was stronger than anything.
Without thinking much, we took the fishing rods and bags and headed to the shores of the lake, which is one of the largest in the area.
We started fishing hoping to catch big and beautiful mountain trout. We walked along the edge of the shore and threw wherever the lake attracted us. After 1 and a half hours we had nothing, not even a single bite. Then frozen, we decided to go down to the next lake, which was behind the top.
Here we immediately felt the change. The wind was not so strong and cold. The water was calm and quieter, with very light ripples. Аnd that, of course, gave us more confidence. We descended to a promontory – a rock where the lake in front of us was slightly narrowed on both sides and immediately after that it widened. It was here that a current formed that looked promising.
I stood right next to the rock in front of the narrow section and Janos went to my left along the shore to the wider section of the lake.
Equipment and technique
We used fishing lures that were heavier – 18 gr., because the water here was very deep and we knew that at such a time the fish was at the bottom. After a few unsuccessful throws, I replaced the fishing lure with a darker one. I threw quite far from the shore and waited patiently for it to sink long enough to feel the bottom. After that I carefully pulled out it a few times and let it sink again, then wound it slowly, keeping the fiber taut. At one point I felt a light blow, I stopped spinning and only a second later a strong blow again.
Large mountain trout on the hook
I caught with a sharp movement and hop fish on the hook. It was a big fish. The rod bent and the fiber was heard unraveling under the brake. The fight did not last long, about 5 minutes. I was about 2 m above the water and kept the fiber taut by winding carefully. After a while I went down to the water so I could bring the fish to my left. There was shallow in front of me and the bottom was strewn with smaller stones. I saw the back of a large trout in front of me and with effort I carefully approached it on the shore next to me. I was happy with this 1.1 kg beauty. This was the biggest trout I caught this season.
Back home
By the end of the day, Janos and I caught 5 more good-sized trout. Maybe we missed about 3 – 4, who got off the hook. Of course, we moved to other lakes. We didn’t feel how it started to get dark despite the cold weather. Satisfied, we headed back to Arendal.
Thank you for visiting Norway fishing & nature!
We hope to see you again soon!
