Driving 2 km away from Kaldvell in Lillesand towards Grimstad on the old E18 road lies peninsula Homborsund. It’s one of our favourite places for sea fishing. Countless small coves with small sandy and grassy beaches, and smooth rounded rocks. As always, crystal clear seabed and shallow waters that get gradually deeper after about 50-60 meters.
Sea trout is one of the most beautiful and tasty types of fish out there. The fish has red meat like salmon, and it’s always very exciting when you hook it up. The fish is very strong and feisty, and it often jumps and spins when caught. It can easily be dropped.
From former experience we noticed that the best time to fish these species is early spring when the ice begins to melt. At that time, the sea trout likes to move to shallow and warm bays with a leopard patterned bottom. During this time of year, the fish is very hungry and attacks almost everything given to her as bait. The best suited fishing is fly fishing, but it is fine to fish with lure too. It is recommended to use small lures between 10 and 14 grams.
The fish is active when the water temperature reaches 5 to 8 degrees. Then, in late spring, it shifts a little to places characterized by a rocky terrain, or on the banks of the coastline. In the summer days it can be found in deeper waters along the countless rocky islands located here. It likes to have a current and prefers a little pressure, or more precisely it is very active when the tide is both high and low.
Great places to fish are also the places where rivers flow into the sea. You can always find trout in a range of 1.2 km. Another thing that is characteristic for sea trout and should be known is that in late autumn when the fish starts spawning, it goes up the rivers to lay its eggs where it buries them to make sure that the caviar will not be eaten from other fish. It will also almost stop feeding. Fishing sea trout during this time of year is prohibited. But there are also fish that will stay in the sea. So, sea trout fishing is good almost all year round except for the period I mentioned.
In the next post we will continue this wonderful day in Homborsund for sea trout.
