The place is characterized by many historical finds that will take you back to the Stone and Viking Ages. There is a variety of vegetation, animal species and signs of human presence dating back thousands of years. Soapstone quarries in this location date also from that time. The ancient Vikings used this metamorphic rock, that is both soft and very heat resistant, to make vessels.
Hiåsen is protected by the Law on cultural heritage.
Access: Drive from Lillesand to the east, following FV 420 to Kaldvell. Then turn north towards Vatne. After driving for about 2,5 km you will see a junction with a barrier to the north road and a small parking lot. The trail starts from here, and you have to follow the signs. After walking for about 2,5 km to the north, you come to a crosspath. Go straight ahead. Beyond the crosspath on the east side is a marked trail which will take you straight to the top.
