Hello dear friends! Here we are again and will continue with our first encounter with Fyresdal! And our wonderful experience at Kvipt as well as the hike to one of the highest beautiful lakes of this place! Enjoy!
We had heard about the beauty of the place. Тherefore decided to spent a few days of our vacation to visit this charming oasis with friends. 3 campers and one car, we headed to the mountains that awaited us. Sara and I had booked a stabbur, which is the name of the 18th century style farm staff cage. The others had campers and it was comfortable to sleepover in them.
As soon as we approached, amazing sights began to unfold before our eyes. On arrival we checked into the mountain farm Kvipt Gjestegard and the others found a camper site 1km ahead of it.
They were so eager that they had already caught the first trout and kept casting the rods.
Sara and I were a bit tired from trip, so we decided to sit down and rest a bit. We admired the beauty around us and enjoyed the view. In the late afternoon, I and two others from the group decided to hike to the upper lake. There we hoped to find the biger fish as we had been told.
The climb was very steep and quite long. Nevertheless when we reached the top we were fascinated by the view. We managed to catch only two nicer and bigger trout. And it became time to head back down, because it was getting late. Furthermore this fish wasn’t biting much.
The next day we continued fishing in the lower lakes. On the third day, our friends left with the campers. They headed in the direction of Bergen, and Sara and I stayed on this wonderful place for another day or two.
Early in the morning, after a quick chat over breakfast, we sett off again towards the top, the two of us. But the goal was much bigger. Once we climbed the steep and ended up on the lake, we managed to catch two more trout. After that we continued along the coast to the northwest. The goal was Lake Grøssæ, it was more or less at the same altitude, but we had to hike another 7 km to reach it.
The lake was much bigger. They told us that the fish here are big and well-kept. After the climb, the hike wasn’t difficult, but it was long to get there. We passed through small ponds and swamps, a variety of vegetation, sometimes low and sometimes tall pines. The terrain was quite wet and boggy. At last we reached the goal – Grøssæ revealed itself in all its magic before us.
We choose a spot and after a short rest we cast the rods. Even with the first attempts, we had already caught 3 wonderful big fish of about 1 kg each.
Action by the lake Grøssæ
I started moving to the right little by little. I had gotten to about 70m from Sara and was casting to a spot that only 30m in front of me had a small rocky islet. Something hit very hard. The fish was big and started to flip and jump over the water. I let go of the advance, but it didn’t help much. At one point the top part of the rod separated from the bottom part and splashed in front of me in the water.
I had slacked off on the lead and the fish moved quite a distance along with the rod. I tightened, but at the same moment the fiber broke. The nightmare was complete as I stood and watched the top of the rod sink slowly about 10m in front of me.
It wasn’t deep, maybe about a meter. Without thinking much, I stepped into the water. I approached and bent down to pull out the line. After I succeeded, I quickly retreated to the shore. The water was cold, but the sun was shining. When I returned to my wife, she looked at me in amazement and questioning.
I also told what had happened and she exclaimed- what about the phone!!! I was numb, reached into my pocket and pulled it out, it was leaking water… And realised that I didn’t have a phone anymore. We laughed a lot at the madnes I had done, and slowly made our way back with eight lovely fish and a soaked phone.
There were waiting for us about 7 km to the farm.
Here we go again! Next year Kvipt climb again
The following year we returned here again.
The place is truly magical. This time we had planned to spend the night in a tent. An unforgettable experience.
After the long 7 km trek up we were quite tired and it took some time to find a suitable bivouac spot. It was quite wet and boggy around. We only brought some vegetables for food, i.e. the side dish 🙂 So we relied entirely on the catch for dinner.
It was exciting. Nice and big mountain trout fed us and we were very satisfied. We spent the night on the shore of the lake, satisfied with the invigorating hike and the delicious dinner!
Thank you for visiting Norway fishing & nature!
We hope to see you again soon!
