Dear Friends, Here I will introduce you to some very important things that relate to sea trout.
Sea Trout facts
This type of fish is probably the most popular in Norway. Whether we are amateurs, professionals or sport fishermen, we are obliged to preserve this fish for future generations. The greatest joy for children is when they catch sea trout.
Like any fisherman, I am a member of many groups on FB. Here I often find various discussions about caught fish. Sometimes good professional fishermen speak very strongly against amateurs or beginners. And now this is where I want to touch on the subject.
No one was born learned on this world. We all make mistakes, because we don’t know everything and there are many unsuspecting things. That is normal. I also made some mistakes in the beginning, before knowing important things about sea trout.
Тhe size rule
says at the caught fish can be at least 35 cm. Furthermore we need to know many other things. Sea trout is widespread throughout whole Norway. It spawns in different places: streams, watercourses and rivers, and then returns to the sea again. Compared to other fish species, its behavior is very different as its color, shape and size.
Depending on the environment in which it is located, sea trout quickly change its color. It is threatened by a number of other things such as water currents and acid rain and no less overfishing.
When the small trout reaches a size of 15-20 cm, it migrates downstream to large lakes or the sea. When her life at sea begins, she changes color from dark silver with red spots to yellowish silver.
Spring is the best
One of the best seasons for sea trout fishing is spring. At the same time, however, especially in early spring, we fishermen make mistakes due to our impatience after the long winter.
At this time of year, the fish are very exhausted and hungry after spawning. It takes almost everything it meets on her way. We have to be very careful. When we catch a sea trout, we have to take a good look at it to see if it is in good shape. Otherwise we have to let the fish swim back to the sea to recover.
Yes, many times we catch fish with the allowable size and above it, but at the same time it is very weak, thin and elongated. This is a prerequisite for carefully releasing it back into the sea. This is a very important rule for everyone. Of course, if the sea trout is in good shape, we can keep it. Another, important thing is if we catch more than two fish at this time of year, it is good to allow the others to swim back. All this helps the good population of the fish itself, so we will continue to enjoy a good catch.
Remember:
- -The minimum size of sea trout to be caught is 35 cm.
- -It is protected around the streams where it spawns and the distance from them must be at least 100 m. We can not fish in this area.
- -Release when the fish is weak, thin and elongated, as well as a maximum of two fish for home in good shape.
- -Fish over 1.5 kg are also to be released into the sea because of their high genetic value.
- -When you catch a fish, don’t exhaust it too much, pull it out quickly. Don’t keep it long time over the water taking pictures, if you decide to let it go.
- -Keep the fish gently under the belly.
- -It is preferable to fish with single hooks so as not to damage the fish.
- -If we have caught a fish and it is damaged, torn mouth or in a state in which it can not continue to swim, it is better to take it with us.
Finally, all of us fishermen who catch this beautiful fish have a great responsibility to manage an important resource in a very sensible way. We need to get the fish back in good condition so that it can survive and continue to develop.
Thank you for visiting Norway fishing & nature, dear friends!
Hope you enjoyed!
